Around the world, people are realising the significant problems caused by plastic waste. In the last 65 years, we have become increasingly dependent on plastic. It’s easy to understand why: it’s cheap to produce, light – therefore easy and cheap to transport – and incredibly strong and durable. But it’s these advantages (a) . Plastic never fully degrades by bacteria, so it must be gradually broken down into tiny pieces by the wind, sun or water. The micro-plastics that result from these processes are harmful to the environment. It is also very difficult to recycle, in fact currently only 9% of all the plastic produced has been recycled. Some is burnt, but the majority goes to landfill.

One popular solution to the problem is to prohibit single use plastics. In the UK, supermarkets are being encouraged to set up plastic-free aisles, (b) , and shoppers are encouraged to make more environmentally friendly choices in packing and transporting their food. A tax has already been placed on plastic carrier bags, which has cut their use by 90%. Bans on single-use plastic items (c) are also coming into place. Schemes for reducing the use of plastic bottles are also being considered, including paying people to return bottles to shops and increasing the number of public drinking fountains. Some governments, such as Canada and India, have even promised to ban the use of single-use plastic altogether by the not-too-distant future.

Such plans are well-intentioned, but it may not be beneficial to eliminate the use of single-use plastic altogether. One of the fields where single-use plastic has a vital role is medicine. This is not just because of its low cost. It’s also because, (d) , infection and cross-contamination are minimised. Although glass products are a potential alternative, cleaning them would be extremely expensive in terms of time, money and environmental resources, (e) . Plastic packaging is also crucial in the food industry, as it ensures that food is safe for consumers. Meanwhile, the provision of bottled water in poor regions and in emergency situations has reduced the spread of water-borne diseases and saved many lives.

XVI. Прочитайте приведенный ниже фрагмент статьи об известном британском исполнителе Эде Ширане и определите, какие высказывания (1) – 7) являются правдивыми, а какие - ложными.

When Ed Sheeran wrapped up the last date of his record-breaking Divide Tour in 2019, he thought his career might be over.

"I thought that was it," he told GQ earlier this year. "That was the top of the mountain and, you know, I'd never do that again. I thought it would be all downhill from here. The end of that tour hit me very hard."

He settled down to married life in Suffolk, took up painting, and became the proud father of a baby girl, Lyra, in the middle of the pandemic.

For months, the singer – one of the biggest-selling artists in the world – didn't even pick up a guitar.

"I was like, 'That's it, this is me, I'm just going to be a dad, I'm not going to play music anymore,'" he told Sirius XM radio.

And then, an epiphany.

"I was suddenly like, 'It is more important for my daughter to grow up knowing that her parents have work ethic and her parents love working hard and love creating and enjoy their jobs'," he said. "And seeing that rather than, like, looking at your dad as technically unemployed."

So here we are, with Ed Sheeran's fourth solo album, called EQUALS. It arrives in the busiest period for new albums in years – a week before Abba's unexpected return, two weeks before Taylor Swift's updated version of Red, and three weeks before Adele's "Divorce album".

Sheeran has a head-start over the competition, though. The first two singles from BAD HABITS and SHIVERS spent a combined 15 weeks at number one over the summer – proving, if nothing else, that the star had lost none of his knack for writing slick, memorable pop hooks.

The rest of the album is similarly polished, balancing Sheeran's ruthless commercial instincts with more introspective, emotional moments.

In keeping with the title, the 30-year-old's lyrical preoccupation is finding equilibrium in his personal life. The first words he sings are: "I have grown up/ I am a father now/ Everything has changed/ But I am still the same somehow."

1) ED FELT ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT WINDING DOWN HIS DIVINE TOUR.

2) ED’S INTERESTS SHIFTED FROM STAGE TO FAMILY.

3) ED HAS NEVER COMMITTED HIMSELF TO BEING SOMEONE OTHER THAN AN A-LIST STAR.

4) ED CONTINUED DOING MUSIC WHILE BUILDING UP HIS FAMILY LIFE.

5) ED’S COMEBACK IS NOT THE ONLY AWAITED EVENT IN THE MUSIC WORLD.

6) THE AUTHOR OF THE ARTICLE IS SKEPTICAL ABOUT ED’S ABILITY TO CAPTURE THE MUSIC WORLD BY STORM.

7) THE ARTICLE IMPLIES ED’S FINANCIAL INTERESTS HAVE ALWAYS STOOD ABOVE HIS MUSIC ETHICS.

XVII. Прочитайте приведенный ниже фрагмент статьи об освоении космоса и, опираясь на контекст, выберите наиболее точное толкование слов, выделенных в тексте заглавными буквами.

Blue Origin, the space tourism company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has announced plans to launch a commercial space station.

Bosses said on Monday that they hope to operate the station, named "Orbital Reef," by the end of the decade.

PROMOTIONAL material released by the company claims the station will be a "mixed-use business park" in space and will host up to 10 people.

The company will partner with Sierra Space and Boeing to build the outpost.

Blue Origin said the 32,000 sq ft station would provide customers with an ideal location for "film-making in microgravity" or "conducting CUTTING-EDGE research" and said it would also include a "space hotel".

At a press conference to launch the initiative, executives from Blue Origin and Sierra Space declined to give an estimate of the building costs, though the project seems assured of HEAVY funding from Mr Bezos, who has committed to spending $1bn (£726m) a year on Blue Origin.

The announcement comes as Nasa searches for proposals to replace the 20-yearold International Space Station (ISS). While funding for the station has been guaranteed until at least 2030, the outpost is in DESPARATE need of repairs.

Russian officials have previously warned that its cosmonauts could leave the station by 2025 over fears outdated equipment could trigger a major incident.

In response, Nasa announced plans earlier this year to award $400m in private contracts to space companies to help the agency replace the ageing outpost.

However, there is likely to be STIFF competition for the funding. Earlier this week, a partnership between Nanoracks, Voyager Space and Lockheed Martin announced its own plans to launch a space station into low orbit by 2027.

Blue Origin has faced mixed fortunes so far this year. High-profile launches of its New Shepard rocket, which saw Mr Bezos and Star Trek star William Shatner blasted into space, gained significant media attention.

But the company has also faced accusations of turning a blind eye to serious safety concerns from former employees.

Last month it missed out on a lucrative $2.9bn Nasa contract which went to billionaire Elon Musk's Space X, one of Blue Origin's chief rivals in the commercial space race.
